PROJECT INFORMATION

Zier Residence
Clarksville, VA

The customers came into the project with some specific goals in mind for their lake house. They wanted to design a modern house that had minimal impact on the environment. They wanted to bring the outside in through the use of windows, while minimizing the suns impact on the cooling system as the house would be used more in the summer months. The house was architecturally designed by Center Studio Architecture.
The front of the home was designed to face south with minimal widow exposure, limiting direct summer sun. The back of the home utilizes large picture windows throughout the great room to give the illusion of sitting outside in the woods and to allow plenty of indirect light for minimum reliance on electricity. The customers were interested in merging into the surrounding community, so red cedar shakes were used to blend in with the barns filling the countryside. The house was built on piers to limit the amount of land disturbance necessary to build as well as to allow for natural water flow throughout the property.
The customers were interested in maintaining a minimalist lifestyle while living at the lake house. The kitchen was kept relatively small but useful. Several spaces are made to have multiple uses. The welcome center at the entrance to the front and back door has a long bench with coat racks for storage of lake gear. Large sliding wooden doors on the other side can be opened to reveal a stacked washer dryer on one side or a mudroom with a large shelved storage on the other side. The loft can be used for either a third bedroom when necessary or an office during the off season. The fire pit was situated to be enjoyed by guests who choose to relax on the deck or from those whose choose to unwind in the great room appreciating the view through the wall of windows.
The back deck is intended to be an extension of the houses living space, connecting all of the major communal portions of the house. Guests can easily access the deck from the welcome center, kitchen and great room, or the back porch. The fire pit makes this a natural congregation space for cool spring and fall evenings. The deck terminates at the outdoor shower situated by the back door making it easy for lake goers to rinse off and freshen up prior to entering the house.
The master suite occupies the entire west end of the house. The bedroom utilizes large windows on the west and north side of the house to take advantage of indirect natural lighting. The suite can be closed off completely from guests and is far enough away from the main living area to limit unwanted noise from guests.
